Senbon Kenjo / Bringing Traditional Hakata-ori Patterns into Contemporary Living

As part of the product renewal for Nishimura Orimono, the oldest Hakata-ori weaving company, I was responsible for the product branding and design, reinterpreting the company’s centuries-old weaving traditions for contemporary lifestyles.

The renewal introduced three collections: Senbon Kenjo, which brings traditional Hakata-ori patterns into everyday life; OBITO, a collection that repurposes premium Fukuro-ori obi fabrics into contemporary products; and Saga Nishiki, featuring one of Japan’s most celebrated traditional textiles, woven from silk threads combined with lacquered washi paper and gold and silver foil.

Senbon Kenjo is a collection that reimagines Nishimura Orimono’s iconic Kenjo pattern—passed down through generations over more than 440 years—as products designed for modern living.

The name Senbon Kenjo (“A Thousand Kenjo Stripes”) refers to a design that reinterprets the traditional Kenjo pattern as a series of layered, repeating stripes. While preserving the elegance and craftsmanship unique to Hakata-ori, the collection transforms this historic textile into products that harmonize with contemporary lifestyles and everyday use.
